Backstage with Denise . . .
The wooden slats creak backstage under the movement of my body. My palms begin to sweat against the coolness of the microphone.Â
I hear my name over the speakers. I feel my stomach flip in excitement. It's my time. My smile is so big and squinty it’s hard to even see the crowd. As the applause increases, I walk on the stage, waving and searching for familiar faces. My voice, confident and steady, carries over the room. This is my happy place.
Although you might be thinking speaking on stage would literally be your worst nightmare, it’s my passion. There is not much else in this beautiful world that gives me such a feeling of excitement and energy than standing in front of people who I get to influence and lift up with my smile and positive energy. Constructing a message to best serve the audience and pouring into them with confidence and love is not something I take lightly, and it is my pleasure to get to do just that. Where does this passion come from you ask?
I love to serve people.
Oh, what we learn on the farm . . .Â
Growing up on a family farm in Central Illinois, I learned the ultimate meaning of hard work. My Father and Granddad truly work until the job is done, and don’t you dare think about doing a job halfway completed. It is this work ethic that has made me the tenacious, go-getter that I am today, and something I hope my children learn as well. We don’t quit until we finish, and we give it our all. Now don’t get me wrong, there were times when I couldn’t see the big picture. Moments when I would have rather been spending time relaxing on the couch or hanging out with friends but instead my sister and I needed to walk our show pigs or feed the bottle calf. We were being taught that our success depends on our discipline and efforts. Although I define discipline in this instance as the inner dialogue of what is right or wrong, I also believe that is formed at times by punishment. What happens if you lied to my parents? You’d clean out the manure-covered stock trailer in 90-degree Midwest heat with a shovel. That only happened once.
It’s because of discipline and strong examples in my upbringing that have made me the confident and successful person I am today. Was it all cupcakes and rainbows? No. Sometimes we have to let the sun set on our challenges of today and look ahead to the rainbows of tomorrow. Do I always wake up feeling like I can conquer my day? Most of the time. And it’s because of the work ethic and tenacious attitude I was shown on the Family Farm that has helped create my mindset. While the majority of our nation didn’t grow up in rural America, lucky for you, all these qualities I learned when surrounded by cornfields and beef cows can be learned by anyone at any age.
Beloved Broadcaster . . .
Getting to talk to hundreds of thousands of people each week in our Tri-State Area was such a pleasure. I never dreaded the sound of my 4am alarm to make it to the station by 5am. We discussed current events, topics close to our listeners heart or life in general. It was so enjoyable and I learned so much about people. For years, I put on headphones, position the mic, and heard my voice across the airwaves of 99.5 Coyote Country. I discovered my overly energetic personality and optimism had a purpose. But that still wasn’t the most important lesson I learned. Nope, I learned even though I was daily in spotlight, it wasn't really all about me.
We’re all selfish to a degree. I went into media because I wanted to be on TV. However, when I was told by a mentor and friend to stop making it about me and to listen to others more intently, I changed. I learned the messages I conveyed and who I got to be was ultimately to serve people. I always loved helping people and now, the way in which I spoke, acted and served had a purpose. I was meant to lift others up. To encourage them. To shine positivity and grace.
